A one week project, exploring sustainable fashion and the dangers of the fast fashion industry. In the Uk, clothing and manufacturing sales are still the 4th largest pressure on our natural resources after housing, transport and food. To address this huge challenge, we all need to learn the value of recycling, reusing and reducing our clothes more.
For my final piece, I created a patchwork midi skirt from and old pair of jeans, inspired by the 'make do and mend' approach. By creating a large panel made from various denim offcuts and sewing it to the legs of the jeans.

Exploratory samples, manipulating denim in a number of different ways such as distressing, fringing, plating, stitching, appliqué, weaving and bleaching. Looking at new ways to invent the jeans.

For this project, I did lots of research into the ancient Japanese tradition of Boro, a patchwork approach used by poor people to make their clothes last longer. This ideology of patching something broken together with lots of little rags and offcuts was the main inspiration for my skirt.
